NASA FIRMS active-fire detections (VIIRS)

Near-real-time satellite detections of active fires from the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi-NPP satellite. Each dot is a thermal anomaly, not a confirmed fire or its cause.

What it measures
Latitude, longitude, acquisition time, brightness, confidence and fire radiative power (FRP) of each detection, at about 375 m resolution.
Update frequency
The satellite passes roughly twice a day over the region; data appear a few hours after each pass.
Coverage
Global; we query a box covering Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo.
How we use it
We count detections of nominal or high confidence in three approximate source regions for the last 24 hours and the 24 hours before, anchored to the newest satellite pass, and plot them on the haze map.
Limitations
Thick smoke and cloud can hide fires, so counts can under-state the real situation. Detections show where heat is, not what caused it. Only two passes a day, so counts move in steps.
