When is haze season in Singapore and Malaysia?
Usually from about June to October, during the Southwest Monsoon, and worst from August to October, when fires in Sumatra and Kalimantan peak and the winds carry smoke north. Rain from November usually ends it. Dry El Niño or positive Indian Ocean Dipole years start earlier and are more severe.
Exceptions and the northern season
Bad haze can come early: Singapore's record PSI of 401 was on 21 June 2013. Thailand, Laos and Myanmar have a separate haze season from about January to April, from dry-season burning in the Mekong region.
Watch the ASMC alert level
The ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre raises its alert from Level 1 (dry season started) to Level 3 (high risk of severe haze) as fires and smoke build. In 2026 it reached Level 3 on 26 August.
