Commuting and masks in haze: what actually helps

For short trips most healthy people need no special precautions up to about 150 µg/m³. For longer outdoor exposure use a well-fitted N95 or KN95 respirator; ordinary surgical masks do not filter fine smoke well. Above 250 avoid non-essential trips.

Basis: Mask and trip advice is a general precaution informed by NEA's bands, not a NEA rule.

Choosing a mask

N95, KN95 and FFP2 respirators are designed to filter fine particles, but only work if they seal around the nose and cheeks. A loose mask gives little protection. Children's faces may not fit adult masks.

Reducing exposure on the way

Prefer air-conditioned transport with recirculated air, use covered walkways, and avoid heavy exertion outdoors, such as cycling hard or carrying loads uphill.

Support for vulnerable people

Singapore's Haze Task Force has said N95 masks will be distributed to eligible vulnerable people once the 24-hour PSI exceeds 200 (CNA, 9 October 2026). Check current announcements, because arrangements can change.

Steps

  1. Check the 1-hour PM2.5 before you leave.
  2. Up to 150: short trips need no special precautions for healthy people.
  3. For longer outdoor time, wear a well-fitted N95 or KN95.
  4. Above 250: avoid non-essential trips.
